Izmir Tourist Information: Glass and glasswork history studies, examine the source of glasswork as the Mediterranean and its surroundings. In Turks, glasswork has been done since the Seljuk period. After the conquest of Istanbul, the center of glasswork became this city, and glass workmanship developed day by day.
The use of glass in bead design for the first time in Anatolia started when the masters who came to Egypt made anklets and bead bracelets at the Arab Inn in Kemeraltı. Turks developed the bead production learned from these masters with their own mule bead design. With the emergence of colored glasses, the eye of the bead has begun to be protected from the evil eye.
It continues its production with traditional methods in Görece village of Menderes district and Nazarköy village of Kemalpaşa district in İzmir. It shows that it was Nazarköy with the approval of the Council of Ministers dated 20.03.2007.
Round and oval-shaped bead furnaces (furnace) are made by craftsmen who know this work in the village. Glasses of different colors are melted in the eyes of the hearths called “pan”, where only pine wood is burned. Molten glass is taken from these eyes for iron rods and shaped on the rail beam.
Nowadays, the required bead types are called karagöz, walnut, cylinder, egg, plate, plate heart, dice, saddle, danagöz. The types of beads are named according to the colors used, such as yellow-eyed blackeye, transparent green bead, overhead blue cylinder, blue-eyed overhead blue calf. The beads are also named according to their size, large, medium, and small. They are referred to as transparent green large black eyes, the small transparent purple cylinder with blue eyes, and large yellow-eyed blackeye. It also produces materials such as rings, jugs, fish, ashtrays.
The evil eye bead design, called “plate”, was very popular with our people, and this design was included in different colors.
